Different Banned products which are being used in fish and
shrimp aquaculture :
An
attempt was made to identify the source of hazardous antibiotics, nitrofuran
and chloramphenicol. Several focus group discussions were conducted in Cox’s
Bazar with different stakeholders of the value chin as participants. Although
it was difficult to identify the exact source of contamination of nitrofuran in
shrimp, three most suspected source could be hatchery developed PL, Indian PL
found in black market and 8-12 types of feeds available for shrimp husbandry
(4-5 are of Indian origin).
It was found that many foreign technicians mostly
from India and Thailand have been working in shrimp hatcheries. They usually
work on contact basis of producing certain amount of PL and got commission from
there. Hatchery used bleaching powder and Cipro-98 for water purification
and chloramphenicol (Bacteriocide-CL)
and OTC (Bacteriocide-OTC) for treatment of disease. Beside these, hatchery
technicians were found to use many unlabeled antibiotics for better production
and survival of PL. this might be due to their unethical urge for more income
as they were found to be paid by a percent commissin per PL basis. That
unlabeled compounds could be either nitrofuran of chloramphenicol. The word in
bold are the most prominent one which are being used in shrimp hatcheries in
Cox’s Bazar region.
